A 467 x 302mm piece of genuine Jansen nest pad — roughly A3+ size, and comfortably more material than a ready-cut nest box mat. Trim it to fit a Dine-A-Chook box, a milk crate, a homemade box or anything else you nest hens in.
If you want it to simply drop in with no cutting at all, our pre-cut nest box mat is already sized for the Dine-A-Chook single and twin boxes. This sheet is for everyone whose boxes are a different size, or who would rather have extra material to work with.
Cut it with scissors, in about a minute
The mat cuts cleanly with a decent pair of household scissors or a utility knife against a straight edge — no heat, no special tools. Lay your nest box on top, draw round the inside, and cut. If you are lining several boxes, cut one, check the fit, then use it as the template for the rest.
A Dine-A-Chook single or twin nest box has a floor of roughly 276 x 285mm, so one mat per bay. Milk crates, homemade boxes, brooder floors and roll-away trays are all fair game — that is the point of buying it as a sheet.
Why a mat at all
A nest liner gives the hen something to settle into, keeps eggs off bare timber so fewer crack, and lifts the nest off the floor of the box so droppings and damp bedding do not sit against the eggs. When it gets dirty you pull it out, hose it, let it dry and put it back — far quicker than digging out and replacing straw or shavings.
Delivered rolled
The mat ships rolled, so it will arrive with a curl in it. Lay it flat, or upside down in the sun for ten minutes, and it settles. Cutting it while it is still curled is harder than it needs to be — let it relax first.

How do I cut it?
Household scissors will do it, or a utility knife run against a straight edge. The material cuts cleanly and does not fray, so the edge does not need finishing. Let the roll relax flat first - cutting it while curled is unnecessarily fiddly.
Why not just buy the pre-cut mat?
If you have a Dine-A-Chook box and want zero effort, buy the pre-cut mat - it drops straight in. This sheet is for boxes that are a different size, or for people who would rather have extra material to cut to their own shapes and spend a minute with the scissors.
Will it fit a milk crate or a homemade box?
That is exactly what it is for. At 467 x 302mm it covers most improvised nest boxes with room to trim. Measure the inside of yours before ordering if it is unusually large.
How do I clean it?
Pull it out, hose it down, stand it up to dry and drop it back in. That is the whole job. It does not absorb water the way straw or shavings do, so it dries quickly. Never use boiling water on it.
Which birds is it suitable for?
Chickens, ducks, turkeys, guinea fowl and most other poultry. It is the same material used commercially under laying hens, so it stands up to daily use.
