Tired of raking soiled straw out of the nest box every few days?
Straw and shavings look right for about 48 hours. Then they get scratched out of the box, soiled with droppings, or packed down hard — and you’re back to stripping and refilling. Commercial egg farmers solved this decades ago by switching to moulded synthetic nest pads. The Jansen Nesting Mat brings that same solution into your backyard coop.
Who makes the Jansen Nesting Mat?
Jansen Poultry Equipment is a Dutch manufacturer that has been building commercial laying systems since the 1970s. Their nest pads sit under millions of hens in automatic nesting systems around the world. You’re getting commercial-grade hygiene and durability, sized for a backyard coop.
How does it help my hens and my eggs?
The cushioned surface gives hens a consistent, comfortable place to lay — which matters more than people realise. A comfortable nest encourages hens to use the box instead of laying on the coop floor, and the cushioning protects eggs from cracking when multiple hens share a bay. The textured surface also helps keep eggs from rolling against each other.
How do I clean the mat?
Lift it out of the nesting box, hose it off, and let it drip dry before refitting. For a deeper clean, a scrub brush and a mild poultry-safe disinfectant will get into the texture. Because it’s synthetic, it doesn’t absorb droppings the way straw does — so bacteria, mites, and smells have nowhere to hide.
How many mats do I need?
One mat per nesting bay. The Single Nesting Box takes one mat. The Twin Nesting Box has two bays, so you’ll want two mats. We sell them individually so you only buy what you need — and so you can add a spare to rotate while one is being washed.
How long will a mat last?
Jansen pads are built for commercial barns where they see tens of thousands of lay cycles. In a backyard flock of 2–12 hens, you can expect years of daily use from a single mat — long enough that the wooden nesting box it sits in will usually need attention first.
