Tired of raking soiled straw out of the nest box every few days?

Straw and shavings look right for about 48 hours. Then they get scratched out of the box, soiled with droppings, or packed down hard — and you’re back to stripping and refilling. Commercial egg farmers solved this decades ago by switching to moulded synthetic nest pads. The Jansen Nesting Mat brings that same solution into your backyard coop.

Who makes the Jansen Nesting Mat?

Jansen Poultry Equipment is a Dutch manufacturer that has been building commercial laying systems since the 1970s. Their nest pads sit under millions of hens in automatic nesting systems around the world. You’re getting commercial-grade hygiene and durability, sized for a backyard coop.

How does it help my hens and my eggs?

The cushioned surface gives hens a consistent, comfortable place to lay — which matters more than people realise. A comfortable nest encourages hens to use the box instead of laying on the coop floor, and the cushioning protects eggs from cracking when multiple hens share a bay. The textured surface also helps keep eggs from rolling against each other.

How do I clean the mat?

Lift it out of the nesting box, hose it off, and let it drip dry before refitting. For a deeper clean, a scrub brush and a mild poultry-safe disinfectant will get into the texture. Because it’s synthetic, it doesn’t absorb droppings the way straw does — so bacteria, mites, and smells have nowhere to hide.

How many mats do I need?

One mat per nesting bay. The Single Nesting Box takes one mat. The Twin Nesting Box has two bays, so you’ll want two mats. We sell them individually so you only buy what you need — and so you can add a spare to rotate while one is being washed.

How long will a mat last?

Jansen pads are built for commercial barns where they see tens of thousands of lay cycles. In a backyard flock of 2–12 hens, you can expect years of daily use from a single mat — long enough that the wooden nesting box it sits in will usually need attention first.

Q. Who makes this nesting mat?
A. Jansen Poultry Equipment — a Dutch manufacturer that has been building commercial laying systems since the 1970s. The same nest pad going into your Dine-A-Chook nesting box is the one used under millions of hens in commercial egg-laying farms around the world.
Q. How many mats do I need for my nesting box?
A. One mat per nesting bay. The Dine-A-Chook Single Nesting Box takes one mat. The Twin Nesting Box has two bays, so you’ll want two mats. They’re sold individually so you can buy exactly the number you need — and many keepers grab a spare so one can be rotated in while the other is being washed.
Q. Can I wash the mat?
A. Yes — that’s the main advantage over straw or shavings. Lift it out, hose it off, and let it drip dry. For a deeper clean, scrub it with a brush and a mild poultry-safe disinfectant before rinsing. Because the material is synthetic, droppings and moisture don’t soak in like they do with organic bedding.
Q. Do I still need straw or shavings on top?
A. Most keepers don’t — and that’s the point. The mat provides the cushioning and grip that hens look for, so you skip the straw job entirely. If you prefer a thin layer of shavings on top, it will still help with absorbency, but there’s no scratching material out of the box and having to top it up every few days.
Q. Does the mat help prevent broken eggs?
A. It helps. A cushioned surface absorbs the impact of an egg being laid and reduces the chance of eggs knocking against each other when multiple hens share a bay. You’ll still want to collect eggs regularly — a broken egg in the box can trigger egg eating — but the mat removes one of the main causes of cracks.
Q. How long will a nesting mat last?
A. Jansen pads are engineered for commercial barns that see tens of thousands of lay cycles. In a backyard flock, one mat will generally outlast the wooden nesting box it sits in. There’s no “replace every season” cycle like you’d have with straw.
Q. Will the mat fit my Dine-A-Chook nesting box?
A. Yes — the mat is sized to suit the bays in the Dine-A-Chook Single and Twin Nesting Boxes. Simply drop it into the floor of the bay and you’re set. No bolts, no clips.
