What are mealworms?

Mealworms come from the darkling beetle. The darkling beetle lays eggs which hatch into mealworms, which then develops into pupa before finally becoming an adult darkling beetle. So even though their name suggests otherwise, they are not worms but rather beetle larvae.

Remember wild or free-range chickens naturally forage for insects. In a coop, the foraging behaviour still exists. By tossing a handful of mealworms on the ground of the chicken run, you help maintain this natural behaviour.

Why are Dine a Chook Mealworms better?

There are many things which affect the quality of a dried mealworm. Things like: what the beetle feeds on, where is farmed, how soon the drying process is carried out. All of these factors impact on the overall nutritional quality.

Our Mealworms consistently have a high nutrient content because they are fed a healthy, vegetarian, GMO-free diet and gently dried right after harvest. Also, ours have one of the highest protein counts, making them a perfect protein treat for your chickens. Backyard chicken keepers who follow good chicken husbandry practices are well aware of the importance of high protein in a chicken's daily diet.

How to feed Dried Mealworms to chickens

There are many ways to feed these delicious treats to chickens. The benefit of mealworms over other treats is that they have a 12-month shelf life if kept in an airtight container. Also, you can use them in so many ways.

Rehydrate mealworms into a plump juicy moist treat that your hens will love.

• Use mealworms to teach your hens and other poultry to feed out of your hand. This trick helps engage children more with the backyard flock.

• Sprinkle mealworms on the floor of the run for chickens to enjoy hunting and foraging for them.

It is important to remember that when feeding mealworms dry to poultry, your chickens must have access to water. The hens use the water to help soften the worms.

Cost-effective high protein treat

Without question, mealworms are not only healthy, but they also are cost-effective. Unlike like worms or insects, dried mealworms offer exceptional quantity for a minimal outlay.

What animals eat dried mealworms?

Mealworms are not just for backyard poultry and chickens. Many animals and reptiles savour them.

• Frogs and turtles

• Reptiles - Geckos, Bearded Dragons, Lizards and even some snakes.

• Birds - chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys and also songbirds.

• Carnivorous fish
