Cut it with scissors, in about a minute
The mat cuts cleanly with a decent pair of household scissors or a utility knife against a straight edge — no heat, no special tools. Lay your nest box on top, draw round the inside, and cut. If you are lining several boxes, cut one, check the fit, then use it as the template for the rest.
A Dine-A-Chook single or twin nest box has a floor of roughly 276 x 285mm, so one mat per bay. Milk crates, homemade boxes, brooder floors and roll-away trays are all fair game — that is the point of buying it as a sheet.
Why a mat at all
A nest liner gives the hen something to settle into, keeps eggs off bare timber so fewer crack, and lifts the nest off the floor of the box so droppings and damp bedding do not sit against the eggs. When it gets dirty you pull it out, hose it, let it dry and put it back — far quicker than digging out and replacing straw or shavings.
Delivered rolled
The mat ships rolled, so it will arrive with a curl in it. Lay it flat, or upside down in the sun for ten minutes, and it settles. Cutting it while it is still curled is harder than it needs to be — let it relax first.

How does a 1.2 metre sheet get delivered?
Rolled. The material is flexible enough to roll for transport, so it posts as a normal parcel rather than an oversized item. It arrives with a curl and relaxes flat in a few minutes - give it ten minutes in the sun if it is being stubborn.
Is a full sheet more than I need?
For a single nest box, yes - buy the quarter sheet or the pre-cut mat instead. The full sheet earns its keep when you have several boxes to line, a brooder or trays to cover as well, or you want spare material on hand for when a mat eventually needs replacing.
How do I cut it?
Household scissors will do it, or a utility knife run against a straight edge. The material cuts cleanly and does not fray, so the edge does not need finishing. Let the roll relax flat first - cutting it while curled is unnecessarily fiddly.
Can I use it for anything besides nest boxes?
Plenty of people line brooder floors, roll-away trays and perch platforms with it. Anywhere you want a washable, non-slip surface that lifts out for cleaning.
How do I clean it?
Pull it out, hose it down, stand it up to dry and drop it back in. That is the whole job. It does not absorb water the way straw or shavings do, so it dries quickly. Never use boiling water on it.
Which birds is it suitable for?
Chickens, ducks, turkeys, guinea fowl and most other poultry. It is the same material used commercially under laying hens, so it stands up to daily use.
