The rat bait rules changed in March 2026
The APVMA suspended every second-generation bait in Australia and replaced the label rules: outdoor bait must sit in a tamper-resistant, weather-resistant station secured in place within 2 m of a building, never loose, never in burrows — and outdoor baiting for mice is no longer permitted at all. Why we only stock the blue blocks
We stock one rodenticide active: difenacoum, the blue Ratshot blocks. Freezone’s published comparison puts its safety margin for chickens and dogs far wider than the common brodifacoum baits — on those numbers a laying hen would need to eat roughly her own bodyweight in blue bait to be at risk, against a few hundred grams of a brodifacoum product — with a lower risk of secondary poisoning if a dog or raptor takes a poisoned rodent. No bait is harmless and nothing replaces the label; the blue blocks simply give you a far wider margin for error exactly where you need it, around birds and pets.
Setting up
Place each station against a building wall — along a rat run if you can find one (droppings, grease smears, gnawing) — secure it in place, load the blocks with gloves on, and lock it. Check every few days: rapid uptake means a bigger population than you thought, so keep the station stocked rather than letting it run empty. Collect and dispose of any dead rodents each visit. If bait is still being taken at 35 days, stop and reassess the food sources feeding the infestation — step one of rodent control is always removing the buffet, and a Dine-A-Chook Feeder keeps feed high, dry and off the coop floor.

Is it still legal to bait for rats outdoors?
Yes - inside a station like this one. Since 24 March 2026 the APVMA requires outdoor rat bait to be secured in a tamper-resistant, weather-resistant bait station fixed in place no more than 2 metres from a building. Loose bait, bait on a tray or bait in a burrow is no longer compliant. This listing exists because of that rule.
Can I use it for mice outdoors?
No - and this is the rule almost nobody knows. Outdoor bait stations are for rats only under the 2026 conditions. For mice, bait indoors (feed shed, garage) or use traps outdoors.
Why does Dine-A-Chook only sell the blue blocks?
The active is difenacoum. On Freezone's published comparison it carries a far wider safety margin for chickens and dogs than the common brodifacoum baits, and a lower risk of secondary poisoning when a rodent dies. No bait is harmless - the blue blocks simply leave far more margin for error around birds and pets.

Where should the station go?
Against a building wall, within 2 metres of it, on a known rat run if you can find one - look for droppings, grease smears along the wall, an ammonia smell or fresh gnawing. Secure it in place, and never put bait straight into burrows.
What do I do about dead rodents?
Search for and remove them every time you check the station, with gloves on, and dispose of them per your council's rules. That is what protects owls, kookaburras, dogs and cats from secondary poisoning - and it is a condition of use, not a nicety.
