Dried Mealworms for Chickens

Dried mealworms are the treat chooks go crazy for. Ours come in six sizes, from an 80g packet to a 3.4kg of four sealed 850g bags, and it is the same mealworms in every one. Nothing added: no preservatives, no additives, no coating. We have bought them from the same supplier for over ten years, and we pack and post every order from Townsville to every Australian state and territory.

How people use them

A handful a day for the flock is how most of our customers do it: scattered so every bird gets a share, or a few from your hand if you are taming them. Mealworms are a treat alongside a complete layer feed, not a replacement for it. They are also the easiest way to get the chooks back into the coop at night. Shake the bag and they come running.

"My girls lose there minds over these" - Sharon, review of the 80g, 2023

Young or fussy birds sometimes need a moment to work out what they are. Hand-feed a few, or soak a handful in warm water first. Once one tries it, the rest follow.

Six sizes, same mealworms

  • 80g - the trial pack, and the bag that comes in our small feeder and drinker kit
  • 283g - the everyday small bag, about 8,000 mealworms
  • 850g - our most popular bag, about 24,000 mealworms
  • 1.7kg - two sealed 850g bags
  • 2.55kg - three sealed 850g bags, our bulk size
  • 3.4kg - four sealed 850g bags, our biggest bag

The bigger sizes are packed as separate 850g bags so only one is ever open; the rest stay sealed until you get to them. Bigger bags cost less per kilo. Current prices are on each product page.

Keeping them

Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight and reseal the bag after each use. That is all they need: no fridge, nothing to add.

Not just for chickens

Ducks, quail, turkeys, guinea fowl, wild birds, reptiles, turtles and pond fish all eat dried mealworms, and because there is nothing added it is the same product whoever you are feeding. The 283g is the size most people buy for that.
