  • Converts a 20L drum into a 4-outlet horizontal nipple chicken drinker — fits the Dine-A-Chook 20L drum or any drum with a 3/4″ male BSP thread (around 99% of plastic drums)
  • Suits up to 40 chickens or ducks — 10 birds per nipple, with forward-facing nipples that work for waterfowl as well as chickens
  • Sealed system keeps water clean — no opening for droppings, dust, mozzies, cane toads or evaporation
  • Stays drier than open watering systems — less spillage means a drier coop floor and fewer wet shavings
  • Same modular frame as our 4 and 5 outlet lubing cup drinkers — quality ASA fittings, leak-free design
  • Danish horizontal nipples (Made in Denmark) — the same nipples used in commercial poultry operations worldwide
  • Australian-made frame — designed and built in our Townsville workshop from materials sourced in Australia
  • Suits up to 40 chickens or ducks — fits the DAC 20L drum or any drum with a 3/4″ male BSP thread
  • Sealed nipple system — no toads, mozzies, dust or droppings in the water
  • Australian-made frame, Danish nipples — built for years of daily flock use

Tired of topping up the chook water every day — only to find it green by lunchtime?

Thread this 4-outlet attachment onto the bottom of a 20-litre drum, fill the drum once, and your chickens (and ducks) help themselves to clean water for the next week or two. The system is fully sealed — no open cups, no scummy bowls, no mozzies laying eggs in the drinker overnight.

How does the 4-Outlet Horizontal Nipple work?

The attachment threads onto the bottom of a drum via a 3/4″ male BSP fitting in the centre. Water flows from the drum into the modular red pipe and sits behind the four forward-facing horizontal nipples. When a bird pecks the nipple, water releases. When they stop, it seals. There’s no float, no cup, and no opening — the system is closed from drum to bird.

Will it fit my drum?

Yes — if your drum has a 3/4″ male BSP threaded outlet, which around 99% of plastic drums on the Australian market do. It’s sized for the Dine-A-Chook 20-litre black plastic drum, and fits any 10, 15 or 20-litre food-grade plastic drum with a matching 3/4″ BSP fitting. We always recommend a non-transparent drum — clear drums let sunlight through and encourage algae growth in the water, which is the main thing the DAC black drum is built to prevent.

How many chickens or ducks does it suit?

Up to 40 birds — 10 per nipple. The horizontal-nipple style means waterfowl can drink as easily as chickens, so a mixed flock of chooks and ducks is no problem. With 20 litres on tap and a sealed system, most backyard flocks of 10–20 birds will go a fortnight or longer between refills, depending on weather.

Will my chickens figure out how to use it?

Most do within a day or two. If you’ve got hens that have only ever drunk from a bowl, a quick demo helps — tap each nipple yourself so they see the water release, and remove the old waterer once they’re drinking confidently. New pullets and chicks raised around the system pick it up without a second thought. Set the drum at a height where the nipples sit roughly at chest level for your shortest bird.

Are horizontal nipples the right fit for me?

Horizontal nipples are a great fit if you keep ducks alongside chickens, if you want a fully sealed system, or if your coop sees a lot of dust, mozzies or cane toads. If you’d rather your hens drink from open cups so you can see the water level at a glance, our 4-Outlet Lubing Cup Drinker is the cup-based version of the same frame. Both work; pick whichever suits your setup.

Pairs well with

Dine-A-Chook 20L Black Plastic Drum

The matching 20L drum the attachment is sized for. UV-stable black plastic helps prevent algae growth in the water.

Q. Will the 4-Outlet Horizontal Nipple fit my drum?
A. Yes — if your drum has a 3/4″ male BSP threaded outlet, which around 99% of plastic drums on the Australian market do. It’s sized for the Dine-A-Chook 20-litre black plastic drum, and fits any 10, 15 or 20-litre food-grade plastic drum with the same fitting. We recommend an opaque drum rather than a clear one — sunlight through clear plastic encourages algae growth in the water. If you’re unsure, give us a call on 1800 103 326 and we’ll work it out with you.
Q. How many chickens or ducks does it suit?
A. Up to 40 birds — 10 per nipple. Most backyard flocks of 10–20 chickens will go a fortnight or longer between refills on a 20-litre drum. The horizontal-nipple style suits ducks as well as chickens, so a mixed flock works well.
Q. How do I install it?
A. Thread the central 3/4″ male BSP fitting into the bottom of your drum (most drums have a matching female BSP outlet from the factory). Tighten by hand — no plumber’s tape or tools needed for most drums, though a wrap of tape never hurts. Set the drum on a stand or shelf so the nipples sit at chest height for your shortest bird, fill the drum, and you’re done.
Q. Will my chickens know how to use horizontal nipples?
A. Most do within a day or two. If your hens have only drunk from open bowls, give them a quick demo — tap each nipple yourself so they see the water release. Once a couple of birds figure it out, the rest follow. Removing the old waterer after the first day speeds things up. Chicks and pullets raised around the system pick it up without any training.
Q. Should I get this or the Twin Horizontal Nipple?
A. It’s a flock-size decision. The Twin (2 nipples) suits up to 20 birds. The 4-Outlet suits up to 40 birds and lets more birds drink simultaneously, which matters in larger flocks where pecking-order birds can crowd around a single nipple. If you’ve got 25+ birds, or you’re running multiple coops off one drum, the 4-outlet is the easier fit.
Q. Are horizontal nipples suitable for ducks?
A. Yes. Forward-facing horizontal nipples release water sideways into the bird’s beak, which suits the way ducks drink — they don’t need to tip their heads back like chickens drinking from a vertical nipple. Mixed chicken-and-duck flocks use the same drinker without issue.
Q. How long will the parts last?
A. The frame uses commercial-quality ASA fittings designed for outdoor weathering, and the horizontal nipples are the same Made-in-Denmark units used in commercial poultry barns. Customers running our cup-style drinker outlets routinely report 8–10 years of daily use with no issues. Replacement parts (nipples, threaded fittings) are available individually if you ever need them.
