Liquid Vitamins are essential for laying chickens.

We are frequently asked by backyard chicken keepers, “Do chickens need supplements?”

Your chickens rely on you to provide them with all of the vitamins and minerals that they need.

This is difficult because the nutritional value of feed changes depending on:

·     How long the feed has been stored

·     The grain varieties used

·     Whether the feed has been exposed to heat, light, metal or oxygen

·     What else your chickens are eating, and how much!

·     How the feed is formulated

·     The feed type (pellet, mash or grain mix)

·     Whether the feed is a “complete” feed or not

·     How vitamins and minerals are added to the feed (in pellets or as a powder)

·     Whether the feed is for laying hens or not

Feeds even vary due to the soil the crops were grown on!

This is why the simple answer to “Do chickens need supplements?” is yes. Providing extra minerals and vitamins for chickens usually improves health and egg production.

Symptoms of vitamin and mineral deficiency in chickens

With so many variables beyond the chicken keeper’s control, it is no surprise that most common problems affecting backyard chickens are related to nutrition.

Symptoms of vitamin and mineral deficiencies in chickens include:

·     Decreased egg production

·     Shell-quality issues such as thin-shelled eggs

·     Loss of appetite

·     Poor feathering and feather condition

·     Weight loss

·     Poor feed conversion

·     Weakness and lethargy

·     Dermatitis, lesions and skin conditions, usually in the mouth or on the eyes, beak and feet

·     Slow weight gain, stunted growth, deformities, rickets, seizures and paralysis

·     Anaemia

·     Decreased fertility including a poor hatch-rate and high failure to thrive

·     Increased susceptibility to diseases and to parasites such as worms, lice, mites and coccidiosis

·     Death

Symptoms of vitamin deficiency in chickens are often mild but any deficiency, no matter how small, will still affect condition and reproductive health. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies have the potential to cause severe problems and if left untreated will decrease the productivity and life expectancy of your birds.

Feed is unreliable and especially if your birds free-range or are fed scraps and other treats. Most backyard chickens do need a supplement to ensure they are getting all the vitamins and minerals that a chicken needs.
