Why choose a cage trap to get rid of rats in the chicken coop? 

There are many reasons to choose a cage trap to get rid of rats and mice in the chicken coop. 

For many chicken keepers, the main reason for choosing a cage trap is to protect their chickens. Although there are safe bait stations and rat baits designed especially for use with poultry, many chicken keepers prefer the peace of mind that a cage trap offers. With a rat cage trap, there is no risk of chickens or wildlife eating baits or poisoned rodents.

Cage traps are also a humane option for removing rodents from the chicken coop. The rats and mice do not suffer from poison or injury. In fact, you do not have to kill the rats at all, and can simply release them somewhere else. 

Another benefit of cage traps is that they are unlikely to catch or harm non-target species such as small marsupials, birds or lizards. If a native animal is accidentally caught in the trap, it will be easy to release unharmed. How to use a live catch rat trap in the chicken coop

Set your rat cage trap somewhere you know the rodents will be. If you know where they are getting into the chicken coop, set the trap so they have to enter it to get into the coop. If you don’t know where the rats are getting in, set the trap up where they normally find food and remove all other food sources, e.g. spilled feed, scraps etc.

Baiting the trap with something the rodent is used to eating can be very effective. But it is difficult to bait a trap with chicken feed! Bread and peanut butter, cheese or nuts tend to appeal to rodents. 

Set the trap in the evening and check it first thing in the morning. This is important to ensure the humane treatment of pest animals and for releasing any non-target species. This is particularly important where chickens have access to the trap, as they may try to get at the trapped animal.

Although rats are rarely cage shy, it can be helpful to wear gloves when handling the cage and to clean the cage between uses. 

If you have an evasive rat, try putting the bait just inside the cage and wiring the door open. Once the rat becomes used to taking the food from there, move the bait further into the cage over a few nights until it is in the basket. Then set the trap to catch the rat.
